![]() Play DarkStar One if you think you can handle the jankiness (it is pretty cheap these days, at least). Stick with X3, wait for Star Citizen and (I think) Elite: Dangerous. So yes, if you're only concerned with the more spreadsheet-y side of the genre, ignore my SSZ/Freespace recommendations (though they're still pretty fun!). There's no trading/pirating/space station component, though. ![]() It's about as complex as the old Wing Commander/Freespace games-you can manage weapons/shields/engines energy levels, you have multiple cannons and missiles, etc.-but with the added Strike mode that plays more like the Descent games in that you can strafe left/right/up/down as well as forwards/backwards. Strike Suit Zero/Infinity are firmly in the first category. To me the core of a space sim is that you're in a small space ship shooting other small space ships and flying the craft directly (as opposed to something like Eve, where control and firing is indirect). The definition of "space sim" is relatively fluid-as I've known the term, it includes both dogfighting sims like Wing Commander, Freespace, SSZ, etc. Or should I just roll with one of the sequels?Īnd what's the best way of acquiring a PC copy of StarLancer and running it on modern Windows? Is it harder than tracking down a Dreamcast copy? Is there a DOSbox version I can find or something? The easiest thing I can think of is tracking down an NES ROM. I'd like to try it out at least once but according to the Wiki page it was ported to every 8-bit computer known to man, so I have no idea what the best version is, nevermind how I'd actually acquire the game and try to run it on modern Windows. I just looked up some footage of the original 1984 game and it looks pretty neat. If there's a game out there where I can be, say, Han Solo basically, then I might be able to get into that.Įdit: Up until now I'd never heard of the Elite series. I really don't know anything else about them, not even the object of the game really. I've only seen videos of games like EVE or Freelancer and maybe some screenshots of the X series. All I know about them is you somehow take a ship around space and manage a bunch of resources on spreadsheets. The closest thing I've touched is Rogue Squadron back on the N64 and Gamecube, and maybe the Dreamcast demo of StarLancer. ![]() I just haven't ever tried a single game in the genre. It's not because I found some of them unintuitive though. In an earlier thread I said grand strategy was pretty much the last game genre I couldn't get into but then I realized another is PC space flight sim games. ![]()
